My Last Teaspoon of Honey ~ Released ~ 19th November 2024

Filmed at the ruins of the historic Mira Flores Homestead.

My Last Teaspoon of Honey explores themes of regret, longing, and hope for renewal. The lyrics express a desire to make amends for past mistakes and to share meaningful gestures, like giving the last teaspoon of honey or money, symbolizing deep care and sacrifice. The repeated refrain emphasizes the idea that despite past struggles, there’s always the potential for a fresh start—“Tomorrow is a brand new day.”

The verses reflect on personal growth and the complexity of emotions, balancing feelings of sadness and madness with the search for meaning and connection.

The soulful vocals are accompanied by piano and guitar and make this contemporary folk gem easy to listen to.

Reviews

Jane Laws musical style keeps evolving, we were first attracted by Purple Poodle as a wry colourful urban city observation, then Fremantle Bound gave us a modern Aussie sea shanty drawing on Jane’s love of sailing.
Jane’s latest release My Last Teaspoon of Honey delivers a song that is calming and meditative which evokes images of wind rippling through a field of grass, the sun setting over the mountains, or the sun setting on one’s life.
Calming; that’s the word.
Great work Jane, I look forward to more.

Fremantle Harbour Bound

Jane Laws - Fremantle Harbour Bound

Read more about my songwriting journey with Fremantle Harbour Bound here.

Fremantle Harbour Bound is one of my maritime folk songs, it is a story about being at sea, for a very long time, and finally sailing towards home. My friend and renowned improvising fiddle player, Erik Kowarski, joined me for the journey of recording Fremantle Harbour Bound. I hope I have captured the great distances and the longing and desperation to be home after sailing the world's oceans for many a mile and many a year.

Reviews

This is a soulful song of the sea from Jane Laws, and she really captures that special longing and anticipation, that is born in a person when heading homeward, after a long period on the bosom of the billowing ocean.
It is a true sea shanty, but soft and introspective rather than the typically boisterous nature of many sea shanties.
Another insightful song of the sea from one who knows it well.

Jane Laws has nailed the joy and relaxation she gets as a recreational sailor and melded it with a reimagining from the point of view of a crusty tall ship seafarer heading under a full set of sails toward the Port of Fremantle.
With reflective lyrics and a haunting fiddle you might find yourself in the snug of a sailors pub on the Freo waterfront.
Pieter van Wessem - The Brighter Breakfast and Sounds Australia - 3WBC 94.1 FM

The song sounds good with soothing melody and meaningful lyrics.

I love the strings in this track. It has a very earthy feel.
Couch Mag

This is a really beautiful melody with wonderfully nostalgic lyrics (it reminds me of O Waly Waly).

Falls of Thunder

Jane Laws - Falls of Thunder

Original painting of Victoria Falls
by Zambian artist G. Mottini 1960.
Purchased by my Mum and Dad from the artist.

My journey with Falls of Thunder, my song about Victoria Falls, began while listening to the teachings of Aboriginal elder, George Walley, at George's song writing seminar in February 2020.

Even though, as a child, I had lived in both Zambia and Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), and crossed the border at Victoria Falls many times, I had never thought of writing a song about The Falls.

Listening to George's teachings, I searched my own spiritual journey for inspiration and "Victoria Falls" came to me at the end of our first song writing evening.

In the early hours of the following morning, while the house was quiet and my partner was still sound asleep, the lyrics to Falls of Thunder came to me, as if by magic, and by sunrise my song was complete.

I hope you enjoy this song as much as I have enjoyed reliving my wonderful memories of Victoria Falls.

Wings of Hope

Jane Laws Wings of Hope, Wendy Campbell On Aspiring

Wings of Hope is an inspirational song about life's quest to let go of the overwhelming deep-seated psychological fears that stop many of us from achieving our personal goals.

I was asked by author, Wendy Campbell, to write a theme song for her autobiography, "On Aspiring."

Over a couple of weeks I immersed myself within the pages of "On Aspiring," and I felt a deep connection to the personal life struggles and achievements detailed in this most honest autobiography.

Writing Wings of Hope became a spiritual moment for me. It seemed as if the words were given to me and I was only the messenger.

It has been a pleasure to write Wings of Hope for Wendy and I hope you enjoy this song.

Lyrics

My Last Teaspoon of Honey

My Last Teaspoon of Honey

If I could I would give to you my last teaspoon of honey.
If I could I would give to you my last handful of money.
If I could I would change all my words that hurt you.
If I could I would change all the times I'd desert you.

Chorus
All the roads I have travelled on lead me to just one thing I'd like to say,
'Tomorrow is a brand new day.'

If I could I would spend my days searching for nothing.
If I could I would turn my nothing into something.
If I could I would believe in the glory of madness.
If I could I would believe in the beauty of sadness.

Chorus

If I could I would write all the words that are missing.
If I could I would smile and rejoice in the listening.
If I could I would cry all the tears I've been holding on to.
If I could I would understand, for the story of knowing you.

Chorus
'Tomorrow is a brand new day.'

Fremantle Harbour Bound

Fremantle Harbour Bound

I am Fremantle Harbour bound,
Around the sound, around the town.
A west bound wind will bring me home,
Away too long, I am harbour bound, Fremantle Town.

Will you forgive all that has gone before,
So I might live in peace upon your shore.
And in my mind I hear a distant call,
I'm harbour bound, Fremantle Town, Fremantle Town.

I am a mile away from nowhere now,
Do you hear me sigh? Do you hear me shout?
And do you hear me sing The Lord's Prayer out loud?
Away too long, I am harbour bound, Fremantle Town.

I am Fremantle Harbour bound,
Around the sound, around the town.
A west bound wind will bring me home,
Away too long, I am harbour bound, Fremantle Town.

Falls of Thunder

Falls of Thunder
(I was inspired to write this song about Victoria Falls while listening to Aboriginal elder, George Walley, at George's song writing seminar in February 2020)

Where do you come from Falls of Thunder?
Where must the rain fall so you can flow?
Through the changing smiles on both sides of the border,
May your mist rise, may your mist rise, may your mist rise and free us all.

Through the eyes of a child I came to your water,
To dance in the mist and watch the hippos play.
And the rainbows end shone deep in the valley,
And even a child's, even a child's, even a child's breath was swept away.

I remember the border, your humble existence,
You always had a smile for a child like me.
While we waited and wondered the mist rose from your river,
Until it was time, until it was time, until it was time to go home.

In December a picture as silent as the enemy,
No water, no wonder, no hippos at play.
I pray for the rain and the sound of your thunder,
Let no man take, let no man take, let no man take your spirit away.

Where do you come from Falls of Thunder?
Where must the rain fall so you can flow?
Through the changing smiles on both sides of the border
May your mist rise, may your mist rise, may your mist rise and free us all.

Wings of Hope

Wings of Hope
Music and Lyrics ~ Jane Laws
(Theme song for On Aspiring, written by Wendy Campbell)

And I will keep on searching along the wings of hope,
Hearing only angels voices, fearing nothing in my way.
And I'll share with you my dreams, as my tears wash my pain away.
Along the wings of hope I fly today.

Where I am, it's not where I'm meant to be,
And this road I find me on isn't really me.
I must find a way, find a way to save me from myself.
I am letting go, and holding on to the wings of hope.

You may be the one who's taken all of my heart,
But the mountains and the stars have captured my soul.
I am drowning, drowning in a sea of fear and glory.
I am letting go, and holding on to the wings of hope.

I've learnt to trust the arms of a stranger,
I've known the summit glow, I've learnt to dare.
And in my prayers, I pray for strength and confidence.
I am letting go, and holding on to the wings of hope.

And I will keep on searching along the wings of hope,
Hearing only angels voices, fearing nothing in my way.
And I'll share with you my dreams, as my tears wash my pain away.
Along the wings of hope I fly today.

Highway Heaven

Highway Heaven

Caught the fever, got it bad,
It was the worst I ever had.
Tried to get it out of my system, thought I could,
But nothing seemed to work and nothing would.

Chorus
So, out for a piece of highway heaven,
To find that space inside my head.
In the wind on byway seven.
Sureal and clear, alive or dead?

Touch her curves, feel those lines,
She'll take you out for the very best time.
I try to resist temptation, there's no cure,
And when she gets me home I am begging for more.

Chorus

Ride on easy, ride on fast,
Highway jukebox, future and past.
I'm living it here and now, the bike and me alone,
On the edge, in the wild, king of the road.

Chorus

Highway heaven with you
Highway, highway, highway, highway heaven with you, and you...
